The modern ‘verse is set hundred of years after the events of Dragon Age, in 13:10 Snow.
In the Snow Age, modern technology is commonplace all across Thedas, but some tensions are constant. The Snow Age was thus named because at the time of the Chantry’s choosing a thick blizzard was ravaging most of the continent, completely by surprise.
The Well-Hung Man is in the centre Kirkwall; a thriving city run democratically (with an Single Transferable Vote system of choice) with an elected Knight-Commander and Viscount. Magic is now legal here, though blood magic is still firmly against the law, and slavery is illegal. In Kirkwall, the right of Tranquillity has now been outlawed, though it is still in use in other areas of the world.
Like everyone else, mages will serve sentences of prison time, though in cells that mute their magic power to prevent explosions, murders and the blowing of locks - upon leaving prison this “mute” would be gone and they’d have access to their powers again.
Templars are now the common name for the general police force - a sort of meld of the old order of Templars and a general police force. Only the most senior ranking Templars utilize Lyrium for their abilities, given the new knowledge of its dangerously addictive properties - many Templars are merely given enchanted weapons and batons or swords (guns are not widely used; see below).
The Guard of Kirkwall are still led by Meredith; despite their title, it’s more of a colloquial term. They are members of the police force but their work is specifically linked to Kirkwall and remain in defence of the city primarily - those of the Guard wouldn’t go undercover in other places or travel far outside of Kirkwall, whereas other police might move from place to place.
The Dalish still exist, and live often without modern technology, though there are more and more “modern” clans that rely more-so on modern technology. Similarly, alienages still exist in most major cities, and elves are expected to live in them. Racism against elves, dwarves and Qunari, especially within the Chantry, is still quite commonplace.
More dwarves now live above ground, and more Qunari and Tal-Vashoth now live among the major cities. However, within Orzammar, there is still an expectation to keep to one’s caste.
Rivain, Antiva and Nevarra all have their own democratic systems, though to varying degrees of success. Rivain is partially dominated by the Qun and is not widely considered truly democratic; Nevarra and Antiva both have very corrupt governments that are distrusted widely.
Orlais has a democratic system that is probably the best of them all, fostering close ties with the Chantry while still running a democratic system; they overthrew their monarchy many years ago in a bloody revolution.
Fereldan is one of the few countries to still have a monarchy; the Fereldans also still have a Circle of Magi mages are required to register with, which to many is considered archaic.
In Tevinter, slavery is still legal, as are both magic and blood magic. The country is treated with distrust and worry by the majority of Thedas, though many blood mages flee there in order to feel true freedom.
While continuing to firmly uphold the Qun, in recent years there are more qunari that are not part of the Qun or who are following altered versions of the Qun - in regards to more liberal ideas of gender, for example.
As a whole, however, the Qunari of Rivain and predominantly Seheron are living in the most impressive cities that have been seen for millennia. With new technology being produced at a massively rapid and efficient rate, the Qunari are also the world leaders in recycling old materials (utterly and completely) and in creating green products.
If you have the newest smart phone, it’s almost guaranteed to be Qunari make. The best laptops, the same. The native Qunari live in massively technologically advanced cities, where new tech is merged with plants and trees - insulation is often soil and plants in order to keep from deforesting the area.
Although the Qunari do not have a functional currency amongst themselves and work as a unit, for outside use they do have a sense of currency and travelling Qunari can apply to their Ben-Hassrath for loans of certain currencies when travelling for whatever reason.
Many Qunari are more widely spread now, for studying certain school subjects in order to return to Par Vollen with new ideas and ways of thinking, as well as working in separate countries to absorb beneficial ideals of multiple cultures.
This is in the value of efficiency over cultural respect or appreciation.
The Tal-Vashoth are still viewed negatively by those within the Qun, as they are seen to be ignoring the true way. This is the same among slightly different followers of a modified Qun, however - despite those differences, there is never war over them, as this would be a waste of resources.
There has not been a Blight for many many years - the last Old God, Lucasan, was defeated in 11:99, affecting the last age to be called 12 Night. Despite this, the Grey Wardens still recruit, and in the past few years a band of Grey Wardens and various companions travelled across Fereldan retrieving various artefacts for the order of the Grey Wardens.
In these times, Grey Wardens are primarily responsible for driving Darkspawn further and further into the Deep Roads, as well as going on “seek and destroy” missions for broodmothers. Due to magic’s effects on most firearms, guns are still not widely used in Thedas, as it is so easy to affect them negatively with magic and force them to backfire.
Thus, the Grey Warden led their party through Fereldan collecting various artefacts before disbanding. In recent years, there was a Darkspawn issue in the south of Fereldan, with many fearing a Blight - hundreds of people evacuated to the Free Marches and North to Amaranthine, but it was not a true Blight.
